Tarot Advice for Your Week Ahead 1/26-2/2: The Fool

The Raider Waite version of the Fool card against a green backdrop of houseplants

A young man meanders close to the edge of a cliff, his carefree and optimistic attitude propelling him forward without a worry in the world. This is the Fool, his gaze lifted toward the heavens, where the sun beams down as a symbol of hope and boundless optimism. Lost in wonder, the Fool stands precariously close to the edge—one step away from tumbling into the unknown. Perhaps, though, that’s the point: to throw caution to the wind and embrace the leap into the uncharted, where limitless possibilities await.

Draped in flouncy, colorful robes and carrying only a small knapsack, the Fool embodies the essence of a free spirit and a romantic soul. In one hand, he holds a delicate white rose, a symbol of his pure and innocent nature. By his side trots a little white dog, a loyal companion who mirrors the Fool’s unwavering faith and trust in the journey.

The dog may be there to guide him, nudging him away from danger, or perhaps to remind him to stay grounded as he edges closer to the precipice. In the distance, a towering cascade of mountains looms—silent witnesses to the lessons that lie ahead. They hint at the trials and triumphs awaiting the Fool as he ventures into the unknown. And yet, despite the risks, and potential dangers we find ourselves rooting for him, hoping he will return one day to share the stories of all he has seen and discovered on his extraordinary journey.

Weekly Guidance from The Fool:

The Raider Waite version of the Fool card against a green backdrop of houseplants

The Fool, marked as the number zero in the Major Arcana, holds a unique place in the Tarot. He can be positioned either at the very beginning or the end of the 22-card sequence, suggesting a critical truth: the beginning has no end, the end has no beginning, and life itself is one continuous, unfolding journey—a perpetual state of movement without finality. As our card of the week, The Fool carries a deep level of symbolism.
To me, this card often echoes the "Hero’s Journey" or Monomyth—a timeless narrative archetype that weaves through the myths of humanity. From the Twelve Labors of Heracles to the epic adventures of Gilgamesh, these tales follow grand, archetypal structures that endure through time, constantly retold, reimagined, and reshaped for new generations.
The Fool invites us to return to the zeroth point, to reflect on and redefine the narrative structure of our lives. In both Tarot and storytelling, I’ve always seen the Fool as a bard-like figure. Bards are the keepers of lore, the tellers of tales, and the creators of myths. They transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, infusing their stories with wonder and possibility.
This week, The Fool calls us collectively to consider: What kind of story do you want to tell? What adventures do you long to embark on? How do you wish to live? It's an invitation to throw caution to the wind and embrace a daring, creative approach to life. With The Fool as our guide, we’re encouraged to see the world with fresh eyes and to take bold steps toward new ventures or perspectives. This is your chance to weave a new narrative—one brimming with boundless optimism and fantastical possibilities. Let this week be your beginning, your leap into the unknown, where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary.
