A Witch's Pantry - Chamomile Properties & Uses

Chamomile is a very popular plant and odds are you've probably had a cup of chamomile tea before going to bed at some time in your life. It is a plant that naturally induces a state of calm and relaxation.

Part of the daisy family, chamomile has two common varieties of flowers known as Matricaria Chamomilla (or German Chamomile) and Chamaemelum Nobile (Otherwise known as Roman Chamomile).

Chamomile is for reals like a natural sedative and is scientifically proven to aid in sleep. The article "Yes, chamomile tea does make you sleepy — here's how it can help you fall asleep" explains.

Chamomile is particularly effective at making you feel sleepy because of its chemical structure. The plant extract contains apigenin, a chemical compound that induces sleepiness when it binds to the GABA receptors in the brain.

Some Ways I Like to Use Chamomile

  • Full Moon Spells: I find chamomile to be a great plant magic addition to Full Moon Spells. Full moons are a time for reflection, cleansing, and letting go and this soothing herb is perfect for engaging these qualities. Sip some chamomile tea while doing some full moon journaling or include it in a bath scrub for a full moon bath.
  • Lucid Dreaming: Because chamomile naturally helps the body to decompress from stress it is an incredible ingredient to use in support of lucid dreaming. When ingested or used as aromatherapy the plant properties work to relax the body enough to be able to receive spiritual insights or downloads.
  • Abundance Spells: Chamomile is also wonderful to use in good luck spells. The bright butter yellow flower’s upbeat energy can be used to attract abundance and financial prosperity. An excellent addition to money spells and or spells to increase chance or probability to move in your favor.

I purchase my chamomile from Mountain Rose Herbs, a great organic fair trade company.
